Amounts are currency-neutral and are split evenly between the number of people entered.

How it works

How to use

Enter the bill, tip percentage and number of people, then calculate the split.

Method

Tip = bill × rate/100; per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people.

Example

A 20% tip on 50 is 10, making a total of 60.

From the check to each person's share

Enter the bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people sharing the payment. SnakTool returns the total tip, the bill plus tip, the amount each person pays, and each person's share of the tip.

The split is equal: every person is assigned the same fraction of the combined bill and tip. The calculator does not divide the check according to what individual people ordered.

The whole calculation fits into three moves

The total per person is calculated as (bill + tip) / number of people. SnakTool also divides the tip separately by the same number of people so you can see how much of each equal share represents gratuity.

If four people split a bill of 80 with a 20% tip, the total is 96 and each person pays 24. The 16 tip is also divided four ways, so 4 of each person's 24 is their share of the tip.

Input
Bill: 80 · Tip: 20% · People: 4
Method
Tip = 80 × 0.20 = 16 · Total = 96 · 96 / 4 = 24
Result
16 tip · 96 total · 24 per person · 4 tip per person

The bill field is also your tipping base

SnakTool does not know whether the number entered is a pre-tax subtotal, a post-tax total, or an amount that already includes a service charge. It simply applies the selected tip percentage to that number.

Tipping customs and bill structures vary by location and service. If you intend to tip on a particular subtotal, enter that subtotal as the bill base rather than expecting the calculator to remove tax or service charges automatically.

Equal math can still need a one-cent decision

The calculator performs the division using the full numeric values. When the result has more decimal places than the currency or payment method supports, the displayed or paid shares may need rounding.

If every person pays the same independently rounded amount, those rounded payments can add up a little above or below the exact total. SnakTool does not automatically assign that remainder to one person or round the total upward.

When an equal split is not the bill you actually want

An equal split assumes every person contributes the same amount toward the bill and the tip. That is appropriate only when the group intends to divide the combined total evenly.

If diners owe different food or service amounts, one equal per-person figure cannot represent those individual shares. The current Tip Calculator does not accept separate subtotals for each person or allocate the tip proportionally between different orders.

The deliberately small set of rules

The bill amount and tip percentage must be non-negative numbers. A zero bill or zero tip percentage is mathematically valid, but negative bill amounts and negative tip percentages are rejected.

The number of people must be a whole number of at least one. The calculator does not support fractional people, automatic tax calculations, currency conversion, unequal shares, or automatic rounding adjustments.

Frequently asked questions about Tip Calculator

How do I calculate a tip percentage?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on 80 is 80 × 0.20 = 16.

Does the per-person amount already include the tip?

Yes. SnakTool adds the tip to the bill first and then divides that complete total equally by the number of people.

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, 20% of 80 is a tip of 16.

How do I split a bill with tip between several people?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide that total by the number of people.

Does SnakTool show the tip per person?

Yes. It divides the total tip by the number of people and returns that amount separately.

Should I enter the bill before or after tax?

Enter whichever amount you intend to use as the tip base. SnakTool does not automatically add or remove tax.

What happens if the tip percentage is 0%?

The tip is zero and the total remains equal to the bill. If several people are selected, that bill is still divided equally.

Can I enter a negative bill or negative tip percentage?

No. SnakTool rejects negative bill amounts and negative tip percentages.

Can the calculator split the bill according to what each person ordered?

No. The current tool divides the bill and tip equally rather than accepting separate individual subtotals.

Why might rounded per-person payments not add back to the exact total?

An equal share can contain more decimal places than a currency supports. Rounding every person's share independently can create a small remainder.

Does the Tip Calculator automatically round the total up?

No. It does not include an automatic round-up option.

Can I use the calculator with any currency?

Yes. The arithmetic is currency-neutral, but SnakTool does not convert currencies or apply currency-specific rounding rules.
